How to measure your kitchen

Measuring is one of the most important steps to creating a successful kitchen design. To avoid problems down the road, it's important that you take accurate measurements at the start. Follow these guidelines:

  • Gather a tape measure a pencil and paper to record measurements.
  • Take your time and record measurements properly. Measure everything twice.
  • Round each measurement to the nearest 1/8".

  1. Start with the first wall on the left and work to your right around the room. First, measure the overall length of each wall in your kitchen.( A on the picture )
  2. Indicate all breaks in walls (windows, doors, closets) by measuring from the corner to the outside edge of the molding. Don't forget to indicate any permanent appliances, air vents, offsets, etc. ( B on the picture )
  3. Measure to center line of plumbing, ducting and outlets. Remember, plumbing and outlets may be moved to accommodate a design. ( C on the picture )
  4. Compare measurement "A" against the total for measurements "B" – they should match. Measure the height of your refrigerator – a tall refrigerator may prevent installing a kitchen cabinet directly above it.
